The FDA is warning consumers not to purchase or use Propecia, which contains the active ingredient finasteride, after the drug was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
According to a report by theAmerican Journal of Dermatology, the FDA may have approved Propecia to treat a specific condition, but it hasn't sold well enough to get the full benefit of this drug. Propecia has been shown to increase the number of finasteride-treated hair loss by up to 20 percent.
The drug is available in a topical form, which can be applied directly to the skin.
It's available in the form of pills that are typically taken by mouth and have a long half-life of about 24 hours. In some instances, doctors may prescribe a pill-free version of Propecia for use in women who have a history of hereditary hair loss.
Although Propecia can cause side effects, most people tolerate it well, and some people are not aware that it can affect a woman's fertility. In the case of Propecia, most side effects are mild and usually go away within three months.
In the past, Propecia has been known to cause liver damage, and in 2011, a federal advisory panel recommended the drug be removed from the market.
However, the FDA is working on a strategy to find a way to protect consumers, and the drug remains a top selling product in the United States. In a statement to ABC News, FDA spokesperson Dr. Stephanie Cohen explained that the drug is being reviewed for safety.
"We are continuing to monitor the progress of our safety and effectiveness and make any necessary adjustments to our protocols," Cohen added.
In response, a number of companies have launched and are selling generic versions of the drug. Meanwhile, the FDA is working to protect patients against the side effects of Propecia.
The FDA is also working with states to warn consumers of the increased risk of breast cancer. Propecia was originally approved for the treatment of male pattern baldness, but has been linked with other forms of hair loss.
In addition, the FDA has received reports of an increased incidence of prostate cancer in men taking finasteride. A recent study suggests that men who take Propecia are also at an increased risk of developing this condition.
In addition to the FDA warning, the FDA also warned that the drug may increase the risk of developing liver damage. The agency also warned that patients taking finasteride may be at increased risk for developing hepatitis C.
The FDA is also working with other states to increase awareness of finasteride and to warn patients of the risks of side effects, including breast cancer.
Propecia is available in two forms, pills and tablets, which can be taken with or without food. However, patients should follow their doctor's instructions and not discontinue the drug.
